MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan University volleyball team continues to roll, as the Cardinals cruised to a commanding 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-13) sweep over Connecticut College in its 2017 home opener Thursday night. Wesleyan is now 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference, and have not lost a set all season. With the loss, the Camels drop to 6-3 on the year and 0-3 in league play.

  • The Cardinals' offense was firing on all cylinders in the first set, as they totaled 14 kills on 22 attempts with only three errors, which is good for an incredible .500 hitting percentage.
  • They scored the first two points of the game and never looked back. A 4-0 run midway through the set lifted the home team's lead to a commanding 19-8 as they pulled away to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • The second set was a different story, however, as the Camels jumped out to a 4-0 advantage. Wesleyan took its first lead of the game after an attack error from the visitor's (8-7), and after back-to-back service aces from Sophie Karolczak '20, the Cardinals led 10-7. After going back-and-forth for much of the second, Wesleyan scored four unanswered points down the stretch, including two kills from Nicole Hilton '20, as it took a 23-20 lead and eventually prevailed.
  • The decisive third set was much like the first, as the Cardinals controlled the tempo throughout. Wesleyan scored five straight points to take 14-7 advantage, and continued to increase its lead down the stretch en route to the commanding win.

  • Kaira Muraoka-Robertson '20 controlled the offense for the Cardinals, dishing out a match-high 30 assists, while Stasie Litinksy '20 led all players with 10 kills on a .438 hitting percentage. Harper Graves '21 and Robi Frederick '21 added eight kills each, and Phia Bellizzi '21 led the defense with 13 digs.
  • As a team, Wesleyan hit .297 with 42 kills, 41 assists and 36 digs. The Camels recorded 25 kills with a .211 hitting percentage, and totaled 31 digs.
  • The visitors were led by Emma Hewlin and Belinda Mullally with seven and six kills, respectively. Katia Elisman dished out 19 assists and Sam Hunter registered a team-high eight digs.

  • "I thought we had a solid offensive night. We had a couple hitters all above .200 and we hit .297 as a team so that's good. I wasn't happy with the game two defense though, we kind of stood around and waited for them to make mistakes. But we came away with the win and that's what we're trying to do, is win matches, so can't be too displeased with that."

  • The Cardinals return to the court Saturday, Sept. 23 for the Christopher Newport Invitational. Wesleyan will play Juniata at 11 a.m. followed by Christopher Newport around 1 p.m.
