Wesleyan Sweeps Bridgewater State and Maine Maritime; Goes 4-0 at JWU Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the second day in a row, the Wesleyan University volleyball team (4-0) swept its doubleheader with back-to-back 3-0 victories at the Johnson & Wales Invitational. The Cardinals handled Bridgewater State (1-7) in their first match Saturday by scores of 25-13, 25-9, 25-18, and followed up with a sweep of Maine Maritime (3-5) with scores of 25-14, 25-12, 25-15 to finish a perfect 4-0 at the two-day tournament.

Robi Frederick '21 was named to the All-Tournament team for an impressive performance in her first four collegiate games. The freshman concluded the weekend with 30 total kills, averaging 2.73 per set, while hitting .353. She also tallied 28 digs for an average of 2.55 per set.



  • As a team, Wesleyan recorded 12 kills in the first set, 13 in the second and 16 in the third. The Cardinals were also incredibly efficient in the second, as they registered a .407 hitting percentage.
  • Offensively, Nicole Hilton '20 and Harper Graves '21 led the way with seven kills each, while Grace Rose '21 dished out a match-high 21 assists. Graves also added 11 digs, and Gabby Bennett '20 tallied four block assists.
  • Kayla Baril, Sarah Gibbons and Megan Tamasanis each had three kills for the Bears, and Alyssa Kelley added eight assists. Defensively, Cassidy Tyros tied Graves with a match-high 11 digs.
  • Wesleyan never trailed in the match.


  • The Cardinals impressive play carried over into its second match against the Mariners.
  • Madeleine Lundberg '19 excelled for Wesleyan, as she posted a team-high eight kills on 10 attempts without committing an error en route to an incredible .800 hitting percentage.
  • Frederick added six kills, and Kaira Muraoka-Robertson '20 and Rose dished out 11 assists each. Phia Bellizzi '21 led all players defensively with a match-high 14 digs, while Frederick added eight. As a team, the Cardinals recorded a .312 attack mark.
  • Maggie MacMahon led all players with nine kills, and Sydney Adams registered a match-high 18 assists to lead Maine Maritime. Adams also tallied 10 digs alongside Maria Perez.


  • Wesleyan is back in action Thursday, Sept. 14 and will remain on the road to face Westfield State at 7 p.m. NESCAC play begins shortly after, as the Cardinals head to Williamstown, Mass. to face Little Three rival Williams at 8 p.m. Friday (9/15), and will compete at Hamilton the following day (9/16) at 1 p.m.
