Wesleyan Falls to Bowdoin, 3-1

The Lead: Madeleine Lundberg '18 totaled 14 kills with a .231 hitting percentage, and Sarah Swenson '17 registered 11 kills and a .367 attack mark, but the Wesleyan University women's volleyball team fell to the reigning NESCAC Champions, Bowdoin College Saturday afternoon, 3-1.


  • The Polar Bears scored the first five points of the first set and never looked back. Ahead 22-15, Bowdoin rallied three straight points off a kill, service ace and another kill to take a 1-0 lead in the match. 
  • Wesleyan responded in the second frame and went on a 5-0 run early to go ahead 11-5. The Polar Bears then evened the score at 11-11, as the rest of the second set went back-and-forth. In all, the second set featured 13 ties and five lead changes. Down 25-24, a service error by Bowdoin followed by a Gabby Bennett '20 kill and a service ace from Audrey Konow '20 gave the Cardinals the 27-25 advantage to even the match at 1-1.
  • Bowdoin again jumped out to an early lead in the third set, going up 4-0, and never looked back. Wesleyan tied it at 10-10, but a 6-0 run by the visitor's put them ahead for good. The Cardinals got within two, 23-21, but a kill from Erika Sklaver followed by a Wesleyan error gave the Polar Bears a 2-1 lead.
  • In the fourth set, Wesleyan overcome an early 5-1 deficit and eventually went ahead 23-22 after a kill from Lundberg. However, Bowdoin would go on to score the final three points to claim the set and seal the match, 3-1.


  • Nicole Hilton '20 added eight kills and seven blocks (2 solo; 5 assists), and Stasie Litinsky '20 registered seven for the Cardinals. Konow recorded a double-double with a team-high 33 assists and 14 digs. Rachel Savage '17 led Wesleyan with 28 digs, while Litinsky added 14 and Olivia Guidotti '20 registered 13.
  • Three players recorded double-digit kills for the Polar Bears, as Caroline Flaharty led the way with a game-high 15 while adding 13 digs. Sklaver finished with 13 kills and Sydney Salle totaled 10. Quincy Leech led all players with 42 assists, while Katie Doherty posted a game-high 38 digs. In all, five different Bowdoin players had double-digit digs.


  • Wesleyan will head to Maine next weekend and is scheduled to play Bates Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.
  • The Polar Bears return to the court Friday as well and will face Middlebury on the road at 8 p.m.
