No. 9 Women's Tennis Cruises Past No. 34 Redlands, 8-1

REDLANDS, Calif. - The No. 9 Wesleyan University women's tennis team wrapped up its trip to California with a dominating win over No. 34 Redlands on Saturday, topping the Bulldogs 8-1 to finish its west coast trip with a perfect 4-0 record to start the spring season. The Cardinals were led by senior Eudice Chong, junior Victoria Yu, and freshman Polina Kiseleva, who all won both their singles and doubles matches.

  • In doubles, reigning national champions Chong and Yu continued their excellent run, cruising past Sarah Ikioka and Elizabeth Johnson, 8-0, at No. 1. In four matches so far this spring, the Wesleyan duo has only dropped four total games.
  • Freshmen Polina Kiseleva and Alissa Nakamoto also completed a perfect 4-0 start to the spring at No. 2 doubles, topping Jackie Lacy and Madison Ross, 8-3.
  • At No. 3 doubles, freshman Daniela Alvarez earned her first career doubles dual match victory, pairing with sophomore Julia Kim for a hard fought 8-6 win over Lexi Lehman and Kate Dolan.

  • Chong, Yu, and Kiseleva all won in straight sets at No. 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Yu was pushed the most of the three but was able to make the necessary adjustments to take the match in straightforward fashion, 6-4, 6-1.
  • Senior Helen Klass-Warch overcame a slow start to win at No. 4 singles, playing some of her best tennis of the match in the key moments. The up-and-down battle eventually went her way by a final score of 1-6, 6-1, 10-7.
  • Freshman Zoe Klass-Warch was impressive for the second straight day, playing steady, consistent tennis and moving forward to earn the win at No. 6 singles by a 6-3, 6-0 score.

  • With four matches under their belt, including a key 6-3 win over No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer earlier in the week, the unbeaten Cardinals will head back east to recover and prepare for a whole host of NESCAC matches on the horizon in April. Before conference matches, though, Wesleyan will make the short trip to Fairfield University for a match with the Division I Lady Stags on Thursday, March 29th at 3:00 PM.
