SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Wesleyan University women's tennis teams went 3-0 on Day One of the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) Friday, going 8-1 overall on the day in individual matches.

The tournament has a unique format for college tennis, with teams of two from each school competing against each other in two singles matches and a doubles match, with the team that wins at least two out of those three matches advancing.

In the A Draw, Aashli Budhiraja '18 and Polina Kiseleva '21 came out on top in two of three tight matches, starting with the doubles. The Wesleyan duo was behind for most of the match, but a late surge in energy brought them to the finish line on top, prevailing 9-7. Immediately following in singles, both Cardinals got out to strong starts, but their opponents from Amherst fought back impressively. Kiseleva eventually managed to clinch the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Jen Chen, and Budhiraja would fall only a moment later to Camilla Trapness 3-6, 6-2, 10-7.  With the 2-1 victory, Kiseleva and Budhiraja advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face another team from Amherst.

In the B Draw, things were quite straightforward for Wesleyan. Nicole McCann '18 and Alissa Nakamoto '21 cruised against Colby-Sawyer, first taking their respective singles matches and then combining for an 8-1 doubles win. The singles scores were 6-1, 6-2 for McCann over Aislinn O'Connor and 6-2, 6-0 for Nakamoto over Evelyn Miller. Tomorrow, McCann and Nakamoto will take on an MIT duo.

Also in the B Draw, Helen Klass-Warch '18 and her sister Zoe Klass-Warch '21 were in complete control against a Mount Holyoke pairing. In the doubles, the Klass-Warch sisters won 8-1, and in singles, Helen topped Ching-Ching Huang and Zoe bested Ishita Tibrewal, both by 6-1, 6-0 scores. Next up will be a showdown against a team from Brandeis.

All three teams will be back in action tomorrow morning, as will Daniela Alvarez '21 and Julia Kim '20, who received a First Round bye in the C Draw. All four Wesleyan teams will begin play at 9:30am, with McCann, Nakamoto, and the Klass-Warch's at Mount Holyoke while Alvarez, Kim, Kiseleva, and Budhiraja will play at Smith College.
