MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team was named a 2019 Zag Sports Academic Honor Squad, as announced by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) today. Additionally, six Cardinals—Grace Andonian '20, Breanna Cavanaugh '19, Gillian Lubin '20, Abby Manning '20, Josie Russ '20, and Caroline Sgaglione '19—were named to the Division III Academic Honor Roll.
To qualify for the prestigious Academic Honor Squad, the women's lacrosse team must have posted a team GPA of 3.0 or higher for the 2018-19 academic year. To be named to the Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must be a junior, senior, or graduate student and have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or greater.
Cavanaugh (Neuroscience and Behavior) and Sgaglione (Government) were named to the honor roll for a second consecutive season, while Andonian (Government), Lubin (Economics), Manning (Neuroscience and Behavior), and Russ (Chemistry) were honored in their first year of eligibility for the award.
The 2019 Cardinals excelled in the classroom while also exceeding expectations on the field. Wesleyan registered its best season in program history with a 17-4 record while reaching the Final Four of the NCAA Division III Championships for the first time ever. The Cardinals knocked off No. 9 Mary Washington, No. 2 Washington & Lee, and No. 1 Gettysburg en route to the semifinals.
