Wesleyan Suffers 3-1 Loss to Connecticut College

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan women's hockey team (3-8-0, 1-5-0) suffered a 3-1 loss to Connecticut College (7-4-2, 3-3-2) on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wesleyan's Audrey McMahon looked to get the Cardinals on the board 9:49 in when she blasted a shot from the right faceoff circle, but Connecticut College goaltender Carly Denora denied the opportunity.
  • The Cardinals had a great chance to open the scoring with 15:18 expired on a power pla. Jackie Kilar sent a pass from the left faceoff circle to the slot, but Gina Mangiafridda's one-timer went just wide.
  • The teams traded penalties during the final 4:21 of the period, with neither team able to convert, as they skated into the break knotted 0-0.
  • Connecticut College's Kylie Wilkes found the back of the net with 3:41 expired in the second when she redirected an initial shot by Ellie Branka, making it 1-0.
  • The Camels increased their lead to 2-0 at the 6:52 mark on a power play. Sammi Estes' initial shot hit the pipe, but Lauren Helm one-timed the rebound to give Connecticut College some breathing room.
  • Wesleyan cut the deficit to 2-1 with 13:27 expired when Allie Damren intercepted a pass in the defensive zone, before carrying the puck up the right boards and tucking it under the crossbar.
  • Connecticut College extended its lead to 3-1 at the 7:11 mark of the third when Erin Dillon found the back of the goal on a breakaway.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Sam Smith suffered the loss in net for the Cardinals, making 21 saves, while Denora recorded 15 stops for the Camels.

  • Wesleyan is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Nicholas at 7:30 p.m., before heading to Hamilton next weekend.
