Women's Ice Hockey Defeated by No. 7/9 Middlebury College, 4-2

The Lead: The Wesleyan University women's ice hockey team fell to No. 7/9 Middlebury College by a score of 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Spurrier-Snyder Rink.


  • The Panthers would grab the early 1-0 lead with 1:43 gone by in the game. Skating with a man advantage, Maddie Winslow would corral the rebound off a Jessica Young shot and put the puck over the shoulder of Sam Smith '20. Sidney Porter was also given an assist on Winslow's seventh goal of the season.
  • The Cardinals would respond as Cici Frattasio '18 got the puck behind the net to Alicia Nickolenko '20 who then found Ellery Sarosi '17 in front for the goal at 14:09.
  • The game would not remain tied for long, as 47 seconds later, Young would take a pass from Grace Jennings, skate past the Wesleyan defense, and put a backhand shot past Smith to give the visitors a 2-1 lead at 14:56 in the first.
  • Young would have a scoring chance on a breakaway in the second period, but she was denied by Smith.
  • The visitors would grab a two goal lead as Janka Hlinka would steal the puck in the neutral zone, skate down the ice and lace a shot top shelf with 50 seconds remaining in the period. Her power play goal was assisted by Elizabeth Wulf and Kelly Sherman.
  • Middlebury would increase its lead to three goals in the third period as Portner scored a power play goal at 9:34. Her first goal of the season was assisted by Winslow and Carly Watson.
  • Wesleyan would cut its deficit in half as Alexis Banquer '20 deflected in the Madzie Carroll '17 shot at 11:06. Gina Mangiafridda '19 also earned an assist on the goal.
  • The home team would put together a few more chances, but were unable to cut into the Panthers lead, and Middlebury would claim the 4-2 win. 


  • Smith made 27 saves in goal.
  • Frattasio now leads the team in points (10) and assists (5).
  • Han earned her fifth win as she made 18 saves in net.
  • Portner, Winslow and Young all notched two points a piece for the visitors. 


  • The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, February 11th as they will host Trinity College for a 7 p.m. contest.
  • The Panthers next contest is scheduled for Wednesday, February 8th as they will take on Plattsburgh St. at 7 p.m.
