Location: Middletown, Conn. (Spurrier-Snyder Rink)

The Lead: The Wesleyan University women's ice hockey team suffered a tough 1-0 defeat against No. 7/9 Middlebury College on Friday night at Spurrier-Snyder Rink.

  • The visitors got out to a 1-0 lead at 9:47 in the first as Janka Hlinka tipped the puck past Cardinals goaltender, Sam Smith '20, for her fifth goal of the season, which was assisted by Jessica Young and Lizzie Sheline.
  • Wesleyan would have a 5-on-3 opportunity; however, the Middlebury penalty kill was able to keep the Cardinals from scoring.
  • The visitors would have a 2-on-1 opportunity, but Smith made an excellent shoulder save to keep the Grace Jennings shot from finding the back of the net.
  • The Panthers would have their own 5-on-3 chance, but the Wesleyan defense would not allow a goal, and the two teams would play a scoreless period.
  • Jess Brennan '17 and Cici Frattasio '18 would have good scoring opportunities in the third period, but their shots were turned away by Julia Neuburger.
  • Smith made multiple saves in the third on shots that looked like they were going in, but the freshman kept the Cardinals in the game with her excellent play between the pipes.
  • Wesleyan would be unable to tie the game and the visitors would take the opening game of the weekend series, 1-0.

  • Smith made an impressive 36 saves in net.
  • Neuburger earned her seventh win with her second shutout on the season.
  • Neither team was able to convert on the power play.

  • The two teams will wrap-up the weekend series with a 3 p.m. contest tomorrow at Spurrier-Snyder Rink.
