MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – First-year guard Caleigh Ryan of the Wesleyan women's basketball team has been named the 2019 New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Rookie of the Year, as voted on by NEWBA-member coaches, as well as the 2019 D3hoops.com Northeast Region Rookie of the Year, as voted on by Sports Information Directors. Additionally, senior forward Tara Berger was selected to play in the NEWBA Senior All-Star Classic which will take place Saturday, March 23 (1 p.m.) at Springfield College.
Ryan, who was also named the 2019 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, is the first Cardinal ever to win all three Rookie of the Year awards. She was also one of five athletes selected for the NEWBA All-Rookie Team.
The New York native excelled in her first collegiate season as she did a little bit of everything for the Cardinals. Ryan led the team in steals (1.6 spg), ranked second in rebounding (7.2 rpg), third in scoring (10.6 ppg) and blocks (0.5 bpg), and fourth in assists (1.4 apg). She finished her freshman season with four double-doubles and three 20-point games, while also earning NESCAC and NEWBA Player of the Week honors on Jan. 21 and Jan. 22, respectively.
Berger is one of 23 seniors to be selected to play in the Senior All-Star Classic and will represent the Away Team (Dark Uniforms) coached by Karen Tessmer of Worcester State. Berger, the NESCAC's leader in blocks in 2018-19, is the lone representative from the conference. She concluded her senior campaign with averages of 12.0 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game.
