MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan University women's basketball team lost a difficult NESCAC game on Saturday afternoon against the sixth-ranked Tufts Jumbos in Silloway Gymnasium, 71-48.

The Cardinals were led by Olivia Gorman's 15 points on 3-of-5 shooting from behind-the-arc as they dropped to 11-8 overall and 3-4 in conference play. Jac Knapp led all players with 23 points as she was an impressive 15-of-16 from the foul line to help Tufts improve to 19-1 and 6-1.

Prior to the game, head coach Kate Mullen and the Cardinals honored their three-member Class of 2019 – Chynna Bailey, Tara Berger, and Olivia Gorman. All three players made an immediate impact for the program since joining as first-years in 2015. They also played a pivotal role in the team's success a year ago, in which Wesleyan reached the NESCAC Semifinals and finished with a 17-8 record.

  • It was all Tufts in the first quarter. At the 2:27 mark, a layup by Knapp capped off a 12-0 run as the visitors led 14-2.
  • A pair of free throws by Caleigh Ryan ended the five-minute, 34-second scoreless drought but a jumper by Sadie Otley gave the Jumbos a 16-4 lead after one.
  • It was a different story in the second quarter.
  • Tufts scored the first four points to extend its lead to 16, but Wesleyan didn't back down.
  • Trailing 24-9 at the 6:30 mark, the Cardinals went on a 7-0 run as a basket by Berger cut the deficit to eight.
  • Tufts responded with a 6-0 run of its own and led 30-18 for the final 1:36 of the half until a layup by Berger as time expired got Wesleyan within 10 heading into the break.

  • The third quarter went back-and-forth early on.
  • A 3-pointer by Gorman at the 4:05 mark cut the deficit to 13, but five unanswered points by the Jumbos put the visitors on top 49-31 with 2:35 remaining in the quarter.
  • In the final 4:05 of the third, Tufts outscored Wesleyan 14-3 to take a commanding 58-34 lead entering the fourth quarter.
  • The Cardinals opened on a 6-2 run but the deficit was too large to overcome as the Jumbos pulled away down the stretch.

  • Berger recorded her seventh double-double of the season as she scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. She also blocked a game-high four shots. Bailey had a game-high four steals and pulled in eight boards, and Tompkins led the team with three assists.
  • Joining Knapp in double-figures for the Jumbos was Janette Wadolowski with 11 points off the bench. Erica DeCandido led the team with 10 rebounds and dished out a game-high four assists, while also blocking two shots and scoring six points.
  • Tufts controlled the glass and outrebounded Wesleyan 50-37 while outscoring the Cardinals 36-14 in the paint. The Jumbos, who only hit one 3-pointer (1-13), went an incredible 26-of-30 from the charity stripe.

  • The Cardinals return to the court on Tuesday, Jan. 29 and will host MIT in their regular season home finale. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
