Wesleyan Drops First Game of the Season, Falls to No. 1 Amherst 64-40

AMHERST, Mass. – Despite a strong second half performance, the Wesleyan University women's basketball team dropped its first game of the 2017-18 season as the Cardinals lost to the reigning national champions and Little Three rivals, No. 1 Amherst College, 64-40 on Tuesday night in LeFrak Gymnasium.

With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 2-1 on the year while the Mammoths improve to 3-0. Wesleyan was led by Tara Berger '19 who scored nine points and grabbed seven boards. Hannah Hackley was the game's leading scorer with 18 for Amherst.


  • The Mammoths used an 8-0 run capped off by a lay-up from Madeline Eck to go ahead 13-4 with 3:21 remaining in the first quarter. Ava Tompkins would cut the deficit to seven shortly after as the Cardinals trailed by seven after one.
  • Amherst pulled away in the second quarter with a 13-0 run. Olivia Gorman '19 finished a three-point play in the closing seconds of the half but the home team held a commanding 31-14 lead at the break.
  • The Mammoths continued to increase their lead in the second half as they led 18-13 in the third quarter and 15-13 in the fourth to claim the 24-point victory.


  • Amherst led the entire game and shot 42.6% (23-54) from the floor while holding the Cardinals to 29.2% (14-48) shooting. Wesleyan did outrebound the Mammoths 38-33, and its bench held a 13-2 lead, but the home team's stifling defense forced 33 turnovers as Amherst held a 33-13 edge in points off turnovers.
  • Vitale finished with eight points and Tompkins scored six. Gorman and Maddie Bledsoe '18 each scored five as Bledsoe led all players with eight boards.
  • Four players scored in double-figures for the Mammoths. Joining Hackley was Eck with 14, Meghan Sullivan with 12 and Emma McCarthy with 11. McCarthy also pulled in seven rebounds, recorded six steals and blocked two shots.


  • The Cardinals return to the court Sunday, Nov. 26 for their first home game of the season as they host Drew at 2 p.m.
