Wesleyan Rallies in Seventh Inning to Defeat Middlebury, 2-1

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Trailing by one entering the seventh inning, the Wesleyan University softball team rallied to score two runs on two hits, including the game-winning double by Su Pardo '16, as the Cardinals defeated NESCAC rival Middlebury College Friday night on the road, 2-1.

Wesleyan: 17-9, 3-4 NESCAC
Middlebury: 10-7, 0-3 NESCAC


  • Friday's game featured a pitching duel between Pardo and Neve Stearns, which began with 3.5 innings of scoreless ball and just three total hits.
  • The first run of the game occurred in the bottom of the fourth when Middlebury's Erin Giles hit a solo home run to left center, before Wesleyan retired the next two batters.
  • Down by one entering the top of the seventh, Amanda Roosa '16 led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rielly Wieners '17. Following a throwing error on a fielder's choice by the Panthers, runners stood at second and third with one out. Angelina Massoia '16 singled to center field on the next at bat to bring home Roosa, tying the game at 1-1. Pardo than doubled to center field for what proved to be the game-winning hit as Massoia crossed home plate.
  • Pardo sealed the victory in the bottom half of the inning as she retired the side.


  • Both teams recorded five hits each as Pardo and Stearns excelled on the mound. The N.Y. native allowed just one run and struck out eight in a complete game win, while Stearns struck out seven and surrendered just two unearned runs.
  • Pardo also led the game in hitting, and went 2-for-3 with a RBI. Roosa, Wieners and Massoia recorded the other three Wesleyan hits.
  • Five different players registered a hit for the Panthers – Siobhan O'Sullivan, Emma Hamilton, Giles, Carlyn Vachow and Jackie Stern.


  • Both teams return to action tomorrow for a doubleheader which is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
