Stanton Scores Five Goals, Including Game-Winner, as No. 11 Men’s Lacrosse Edges No. 15 Bowdoin 10-9 in NESCAC Thriller

The Lead: In an incredibly close game that went back-and-forth throughout, the 11th-ranked Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team prevailed over No. 15 Bowdoin College on the road Saturday, 10-9, on a game-winning goal from Harry Stanton '18 with 8:16 to play. The victory extended the Cardinals' win streak to 11 straight games.


  • The Polar Bears took a 2-0 advantage in the opening minutes as Matthew Crowell scored the first goal (11:45), and assisted on the second (9:54).
  • Wesleyan responded, however, and went on a 2-0 run of its own off back-to-back goals from Stanton and Christian Barker '19 just 1:19 apart.
  • Bowdoin regained a lead with 3:18 to play, but Carter Hawthorne '19 found the back of the net with :41 on the clock to even the score at 3-3 after the first quarter.
  • The second quarter featured a defensive battle as both teams were held to one goal. Drew Hillman put the home team ahead 4-3 at the 12:54 mark, but Stanton scored again with 7:40 to play as the game was knotted at 4-4 heading into the break.
  • Stanton led all players in the first half with two goals.


  • It was a similar story in the second half as neither team could pull away.
  • Stanton gave Wesleyan its first lead of the game with 8:05 on the clock, but the Polar Bears responded with back-to-back goals at the 7:27 and 6:38 marks to go ahead, 6-5.
  • Just 21 seconds later, Stanton found the back of the net to even the game at six, and Ben Shively '18 scored 16 seconds after that to go up 7-6.
  • Despite the quick shift in momentum, Bowdoin scored two of the final three goals in the third quarter, including a score from Shawn Daly with :02 on the clock to even the game at 8-8 entering the fourth.
  • With 12:51 to play in regulation, Barker connected with Taylor Ghesquiere '18 to give the Cardinals a 9-8 lead.
  • Daniel Buckman tied the game once again with 9:04 to play, but Stanton took advantage of a man-up situation and scored the game-winner just 48 seconds later.
  • Both defenses remained strong the rest of the way as Wesleyan held on for the thrilling victory on the road.


  • Stanton finished with a game-high five goals, while Ghesquiere scored twice and three others scored once. Zander Kotsen '19 picked up a team-high four ground balls, Quinn Mendelson '17 caused a game-high three turnovers, and goalie Ted Bergman '17 made 12 saves in net.
  • Three players scored two goals for Bowdoin – Daly, Buckman and Crowell. Daly and Buckman each dished out two assists as well to finish with four points, while Crowell registered one assist for three points. Caleb Geitz registered a game-high five ground balls and Peter Mumford tallied 12 saves.
  • In a very even match-up, Wesleyan won the faceoff battle 14-23, and held a 25-16 edge in ground balls.


  • The Cardinals are back in action Tuesday, April 18 and will host Skidmore in a non-conference game beginning at 5 p.m.
