No. 13 Wesleyan Wins 17-13 Over Little Three Rival and No. 11 Amherst

The Lead: Tom Dupont '17 scored a career-high six goals and Ted Bergman '17 made 19 saves in net to help lead the No. 13 Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team to a 17-13 win over Little Three rival and 11th-ranked Amherst College on the road Wednesday night.


  • The Mammoths got on the board first with a man-up goal from Chris Albanese at the 12:20 mark. However, the Cardinals responded with three-straight from Harry Stanton '18 (8:49), Cole Turpin '18 (7:50) and Taylor Ghesquiere '18 (5:58).
  • Amherst closed out the first quarter on a 2-0 run with scores from Andrew Ford (3:26) and Brogan Mahon (1:50).
  • After another goal from the home team at 13:28 in the second, Stanton and Ghesquiere put the Cardinals ahead once again with goals at the 11:03 and 6:46 marks.
  • The Mammoths responded, however, with a 2-0 run on back-to-back goals from Albanese, but with :32 on the clock, Dupont found the back of the net to even the score at 6-6 heading into the break.
  • Albanese led all players in the first half with three goals.


  • The Cardinals came out hot to start the third quarter as they opened up on a 4-0 run within the first seven minutes of action to take a 10-6 lead.
  • After both teams exchanged scores to keep it a four-goal game, Amherst found the back of the net twice just 21 seconds apart to get within two, 11-9.
  • Following consecutive goals from both teams, Dupont put Wesleyan ahead by three with :17 remaining on the clock. 
  • He lifted the Cardinals lead to 14-10 early in the fourth (12:11) as well, but the Mammoths responded once again with goals at the 9:52 and 6:01 marks to cut the deficit to two.
  • Wesleyan put the game out of reach in the closing minutes with a 3-0 run beginning at the 4:51 mark and ending with :39 to play to go ahead by five, 17-12.
  • A goal from Colin Minicus with :16 remaining on the clock cut the deficit to four as Wesleyan pulled off the difficult road win against its archrival.


  • Dupont, Ghesquiere, Stanton and Turpin all scored multiple goals. Ghesquiere finished with four and one assist, Stanton scored three times and dished out an assist, and Turpin finished with five points on two goals and three assists. Additionally, Christian Barker '19 led all players with four assists, and Carter Hawthorne '19 scored once and registered two assists. Defensively, Jake Cresta '18 led the team with three caused turnovers.
  • Amherst was led by Albanese, who finished with five goals, while Trenton Shore registered five points on two goals and three assists. Minicus and Mahon each tallied four points, and Jamie Smith led the defense with four caused turnovers. Dylan Finazzo pulled in 14 ground balls and goalie Cody Tranbarger made 10 saves between the posts.
  • Wesleyan held a 48-43 edge in ground balls.

  • "We are happy with a great NESCAC win on the road against a very good team in Amherst. Senior Ted Bergman was outstanding in net tonight, and Tom Dupont had a monster night and played like an experienced veteran."


  • Wesleyan is back in action Saturday, April 8 and will host its other Little Three rival, Williams. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
