AMHERST, Mass. – The Wesleyan men's basketball team was defeated on the road by Little Three rival Amherst on Friday night in LeFrak Gymnasium, 75-54.
WIth the loss, the Cardinals drop to 13-6 overall and 2-3 in the NESCAC. The Mammoths improve to 14-6 overall and 4-2 in league play.
Evenly matched through the first 15 minutes of play, the sides traded buckets to push the score to 30 all with 4:28 remaining in the first half before the Mammoths kicked it into gear to take an 11-point lead (43-32) into halftime.
Continuing to hold momentum out of the break, the Mammoths led by as many as 24 points at the end of a 32-8 run over an 11-minute span – setting the score at 62-38 with 12:54 remaining.
Looking to claw back into contention down the stretch, the Cardinals knocked down 15 points over the next seven minutes to cut the Amherst lead to 13 (66-53), however, that is as close as the visitors got as the Mammoths kept Wesleyan to just one-point in the final 5:53 to clinch the 75-54 victory.
Antone Walker was the Cardinals' leading point-getter with 15 to go along with a rebound, three assists and two steals in a solid all-around performance, while Jordan James added 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting.
Going 9-for-15 from the floor, including a stellar 7-for-12 from behind the arc, Garrett Day led all players with 29 points while adding two rebounds and four assists for Amherst. Michael Schretter also hit double-digits for the home team, adding 12 points, three rebounds and four assists, while Devonn Allen posted a game-high three steals.
The Cardinals return to the court Sunday, Feb. 2 when they travel to Hamilton College for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
