Wesleyan Drops First Game of Season to Springfield, 72-67

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The 12th-ranked Wesleyan University men's basketball team lost its first game of the 2017-18 season Sunday night against Springfield College, 72-67, at the Hampton Inn West Springfield/Naismith Classic. The Cardinals won at least nine-straight games to open the year for the second consecutive season—they won 11 in a row last year—and are now 9-1 overall. With the win, the Pride improves to 6-5.


  • Wesleyan scored the first 10 points of the game to take a commanding lead early on.
  • The Cardinals never trailed in the first half and led 34-23 at the break.
  • Jordan Sears '18 led all players with 11 points in the first 20 minutes of action as he went 4-of-5 from the floor.
  • The second half was a different story, however, as the Pride slowly cut into the deficit before a pair of free throws by Jake Ross tied the game at 56-56 with7:09 to play.
  • Seconds later, a lay-up by Andy McNulty put Springfield up on top for the first time and the home team would never look back.
  • Kevin O'Brien '19 got the Cardinals within three, 70-67 with :17 on the clock, but Ross would put the game away from the charity stripe down the stretch.


  • Jordan Bonner '19 scored a team-high 19 points for Wesleyan as he went a perfect 6-for-6 from the line. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Sears finished with 17 points, seven boards, and six blocks, and Nathan Krill '18 scored 12 points with seven rebounds. O'Brien finished with team-highs of eight boards and five assists while scoring nine points as well.
  • Ross finished with a game-high 26 points and 12 boards. Heath Post and Cam Earle each scored 14 and McNulty added 11. Post secured 12 rebounds as well and Ross dished out a team-high four assists.


  • The Cardinals return to Silloway Gymnasium for their next contest as they open NESCAC play against Little Three rival and No. 5 Williams Friday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m.
