CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior co-captain Ben Thaw of the Wesleyan football team has been to the 2019 New England Football Writers College Division II/III All-New England Team following a stellar season for the Cardinals. He was just one of 29 players selected from 20 different teams, and one of three athletes from the NESCAC.
Thaw, who was recently named an All-NESCAC First Team Defense selection, excelled this fall and was arguably the best defensive back in the conference. He led the league in interceptions (5), pass break-ups (9), and blocked kicks (2). Thaw also finished fourth on the team in tackles (40) and returned an interception for a touchdown.
The Westport, Conn. native played a crucial role in Wesleyan's success this fall in which the Cardinals posted an 8-1 record to finish second in the NESCAC. In the final game of the season, and his career, Thaw recorded five tackles, two interceptions, and one blocked kick en route to NESCAC Defensive Player of the Week honors. His first interception came at the midway point of the second quarter at the Wesleyan-15 to help keep Trinity off the board at halftime. Thaw's second interception ended the Bantams' chance of a comeback as he picked off the Trinity quarterback on the Wesleyan-31 with just under two minutes remaining in regulation. The Cardinals gained a first down and sealed the win, defeating Trinity on the road for the first time since 1997.
Thaw will be honored at the New England Football Writers Captains and Awards Banquet on Thursday, December 12 at Rosaria Restaurant and Function Facility in Saugus, Mass.
