Wesleyan Mourns Passing of Bill Macdermott

The Wesleyan University Athletics Department mourns the passing of former head football coach Bill Macdermott, who passed away Thursday, May 5 at the age of 79.

After serving as an assistant football coach at Wesleyan from 1966-to-1970, Macdermott took the helm of the program in 1971 and coached 16 seasons for the Cardinals. During that time, he amassed a 66-59-3 record, good for a .527 winning percentage. His 66 wins are third all-time among Wesleyan head football coaches.

Following his tenure at Wesleyan, Macdermott entered the Canadian Football League as an assistant coach with the Toronto Argonauts in 1990. He would go on to work for the Montreal Alouettes ('92), the Winnipeg Blue Bombers ('97) and the Saskatchewan Roughriders ('11).

His more than 50-year coaching career also includes stints with the Edmonton Huskies as head coach, Spruce Grove Panthers, Ottawa Gee-Gees, California Polytechnic University, NFL Europe's Orlando Thunder and the San Diego Chargers of the NFL. Most recently, he lent his talents to the University of Alberta Golden Bears.
