  • Football Cruises Past Bates, 44-13

    The Wesleyan University football team outscored Bates College in the third quarter, 23-0, en route to a decisive 44-13 win on the road Saturday afternoon. Senior quarterback Mark Piccirillo totaled 270 yards of offense with four touchdowns and zero interceptions as the Cardinal improved to 3-2 on the season.

    Wesleyan (2-2) and Bates (0-4) meet for the 37th time on Saturday in a series that has been dominated by the Cardinals. The last win by the Bobcats was a 30-29 overtime victory in 2005. Since then, it’s been all Wesleyan as the Cardinals have won 12 in a row and are 32-4 all-time against their NESCAC foe.

    Saturday’s meeting between Wesleyan (1-2) and Colby (0-3) marks the 41st game in a series that dates back to 1927. The two programs have played each other every year since the 1988 season, as the Cardinals boast a 23-17 all-time record against their NESCAC foe. Wesleyan has also won eight straight against the Mules, including a 37-6 victory in 2016 and a 41-7 win at home last fall.

In a 55-28 victory over the Middlebury Panthers, Matt Perceval ’00 caught a remarkable seven touchdown passes thrown by Jake Fay ’00. It may have been the apex of their football careers – a game that set records that stand to this day – but it was just one moment in a special relationship that both men still cherish.

    Christian Snell of Hamilton College blocked a Wesleyan punt and recovered it in the end zone with just 1:34 to play in regulation as the Continentals stunned the Cardinals at Corwin Stadium Saturday afternoon, 33-29.

    Senior offensive lineman Joe Wilson of the Wesleyan University football team has been named one of 179 semifinalists for the 2018 William V. Campbell Trophy®, as announced by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF). The award recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation.

    Saturday marks the 48th all-time meeting between Wesleyan (1-1) and Hamilton (0-2), with the Cardinals leading the series, 29-17-1. The two NESCAC rivals have faced each other every year since 1984, and Wesleyan has won six-straight including a 31-9 victory on the road last season and a 34-6 home win in 2016.

    For the third-straight season, Wesleyan and Tufts played in a thrilling night game as the Jumbos held on to defeat the Cardinals at Ellis Oval / Zimman Field on Saturday, 16-13. Wesleyan (1-1) controlled the clock in the second half and held Tufts (2-0) scoreless in the final 30 minutes of play, but the Cardinals were unable to capitalize.

    For the third year in a row, Wesleyan and Tufts will meet under the lights as the Jumbos play host to the Cardinals on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. on Ellis Oval / Zimman Field. The previous two meetings featured NESCAC thrillers with the Jumbos taking the first game, 17-14 at home in 2016, and the Cardinals responding with an incredible 24-17 overtime victory a year ago. The series is all tied up at 23-23-2 with Wesleyan winning four of the last five meetings dating back to 2009.

    Junior DB Ben Thaw of the Wesleyan University football team was named the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday, as announced by the league office. Thaw played a pivotal role in Wesleyan's decisive 52-21 win over Middlebury yesterday in the 2018 season-opener.

    Sean Penney ’21 rushed for three touchdowns and Ben Thaw ’20 recorded two interceptions, including a 30-yard pick-six, as the Wesleyan University football team cruised to a decisive 52-21 win over Middlebury College in the 2018 season-opener at Corwin Stadium Saturday afternoon.

    Wesleyan and Middlebury meet for the 49th time on Saturday in a historic rivalry that dates back to 1907. The Cardinals own a 24-22-2 advantage but have lost the last two meetings by a total of six points. The last five games between the two NESCAC rivals have been extremely close with the point differential just 18. The largest margin during that stretch was an eight-point victory by Wesleyan in 2014. Also, the longest win streak in the series is just seven, owned by Middlebury from 1956-to-1962.
